ISAIAH IS 53:5 CORRECT TRANSLATION:

Isaiah 53:5 is a classic example of mistranslation: The verse does not say, “He was wounded for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities,” which could convey the vicarious suffering ascribed to Jesus. Rather, the proper translation is: “He was wounded because of our transgressions, and crushed because of our iniquities.” This conveys that the Servant suffered as a result of the sinfulness of others.
Indeed, the Christian idea directly contradicts the basic Jewish teaching that God promises forgiveness to all who sincerely return to Him; thus there is no need for the Messiah to atone for others (Isaiah 55:6-7, Jeremiah 36:3, Ezekiel chapters 18 and 33, Hoseah 14:1-3, Jonah 3:6-10, Proverbs 16:6, Daniel 4:27, 2-Chronicles 7:14).

Brian says: This means that Isaiah 53 is not talking about a man who died 'for our sins,' but rather it is about a man who died 'BECAUSE of our sins,' or 'AS A RESULT of our sins.

Because, not for our sins.  Second, did you see how the NET does not say that he was punished “for” our sins but “because of our sins”? So what’s the difference? The Hebrew preposition translated “for” is “min”. It does not mean “for” but “from” or “out of” or “because of”. This is why the NET has more accurately translated the preposition as “because of” our sins to mean that it was “out of, from, as a means of, because of” our sinful actions that the servant was killed! This is more in harmony with the general thrust of the whole chapter as we have already seen.

This same point is substantiated in the Greek Version [called the Septuagint] of the Hebrew text. Remember that when New Testament writers quoted the Old Testament it actually quoted the Greek version of it!  The Greek of this text has the preposition “dia” followed by the accusative case of the noun to follow - which again means exactly the same as what the Hebrew says! If you look up any basic Greek Grammar you will read that “dia” followed by nouns in the accusative case, means “because of” not for! See “The elements of New Testament Greek”, by J.W. Wenham, p.66.

The upshot is this: both the Greek and Hebrew use of their prepositions indicate not that the Servant dies as a substitute for our sins but that he dies because of our direct sinful murderous actions! In other words: we through injustice killed the Servant through sinful, violent actions. This agrees perfectly with the overall message of the chapter as we have seen.

The exact same dynamic is seen in verse 8 where we are told that the Servant is put to death “out of” [Hebrew “min” again”!] an unjust trial, “from” [min] the peoples’ transgression. We have here the exact same Hebrew and Greek construction as we do in verse 5!

The preposition 'for' (מן min) here answers to the Greek διά dia, on account of, and denotes the cause for which he suffered and means, even according to Gesenius (Lex.), here, 'the ground or motive on account of, or because of which anything is done.' It is strikingly parallel to the passage in Romans 4:25 : 'Who was delivered for (διά dia) our offences.' Compare 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 9:28; 1 Peter 2:24. Here the sense is, that the reason why he thus suffered was, because we were transgressors.

20.    The whole context of Is 53:5 indicates man despised, rejected and killed Him. He died because of them. The context dictates v5 should be translated “BECAUSE OF.”

21.    The ABP has several verses in Is 53 saying He was killed BY OR BECAUSE OF our sins:

22.    Is 53:8 use the same Hebrew “min”. and is translated as “because of.”

The exact same dynamic is seen in verse 8 where we are told that the Servant is put to death “out of” [Hebrew “min” again”!] an unjust trial, “from” [min] the peoples’ transgression. We have here the exact same Hebrew and Greek construction as we do in verse 5!
d.      The above references that translated v 5 as “because of” probably translated v8 in line with v5, but I did not cross reference all of them.   

23.    Rom 4:25 Paul obviously quoted Isaiah. All Greek texts use “dia.” Several translations use “because of” here. It confirms Is 53:53 was understood to mean “because of.”

It is strikingly parallel to the passage in Romans 4:25 : 'Who was delivered for (διά dia) our offences.' Compare 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 9:28; 1 Peter 2:24. Here the sense is, that the reason why he thus suffered was, because we were transgressors.

COLLABORATING EVIDENCE:
24.    Jesus quoted Isaiah 53 in His cup sayings and it confirms this translation.
a.        Mat 26:28  For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed because of (Gr. Peri) many for the remission of sins.
b.        Mar 14:24  And He said to them, "This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed because of (Gr. Peri) many.
25.    All Jesus’ references to the cause of His death also confirm that He will be killed by the sinners, i.e. they will be the cause of His suffering and death.
26.    His parable of the wicked husbandmen in Matt 21:33-46, Luke and Mark clearly indicate that He was rejected and murdered by all men – those who do not give God His due fruit. All sinners do that.
27.    Joseph. He was a type of Christ. Mankind is his brothers. God pre-ordained that he will one day save them. He allowed his brothers to sell him into slavery and they killed him in their hearts when they hated him. They can and will never say he was sold into slavery FOR them or on their behalf. No, they did that because of their evil hearts. If they stood before Him, they can NEVER be happy that he was sold as a slave to Egypt FOR them. As a secondary aspect they might say God allowed it for them, to change their hearts and save them from hunger.  But Joseph suffered because of them.
28.    David: He can only say the little child of Batsheba died because of his sins.
29.    Psa 69:9  & Rom 15:3 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.  
Psa 69:20  Reproach hath broken my heart;
The reproaches of man fell on Him, wounded Him and broke His heart. The reproaches caused His heart to be broken. His heart was not broken FOR the reproaches and for sinners. 
30.    Ezec 6:9. because I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me, and by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols; they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed in all their abominations. Because of man’s adulterous hearts and eyes, God is crushed i.e. Jesus is crucified. .
31.    Zech 12:10 and Rev. 1: 7  Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. All nations will mourn because they will see He was pierced by them. 
32.    Peter on Pentecost: Peter clearly told all the Jews they denied, betrayed and killed their Messiah, or caused His death by denying and betraying Him, although they were not in person doing it. He died BECAUSE OF THEM.
33.    Pilate, the Roman soldiers and the Chief Priest can only say Jesus bled BECAUSE OF / BY / THROUGH them and never FOR. All sinners are the same.
34.    Paul: Jesus told him he persecuted and killed Him. Jesus died BECAUSE OF / BY / THROUGH him. Rom 4:25 confirms that. Paul could never have written Jesus was killed for him or his sins. And all men are sinners like him and they also persecute and kill Jesus. All translations using FOR are wrongly translated.
35.    1 Cor 12:27. People who use the Lord’s Supper unworthily are guilty of Jesus’ body and blood i.e. they wound Him and cause Him to bleed.
36.    1Pet 2:24 Peter included himself with those who were responsible for spilling Jesus’ blood when he wrote in  1Pe 2:24  who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree.,Our sins made the wounds in His body and caused of His death. God allowed it, but we all did it makes us no less guilty, on the contrary…

38.    Logically: It cannot be FOR because then it implies man had no guilt but Jesus died out of His own goodness. Who then actually killed Him that day on Golgotha? It was man because of the evil and blindness of their hearts. God allowed man to kill Him, but He did not kill Him. And all sinners are equally guilty.

CONCLUSION:
The correct translation of Is. 53:5 beyond any doubt is:
But He was wounded because of our/ my transgressions; He was bruised because of our/ my  iniquities;
The translations saying FOR are wrongly translated in the Old and in the New Testament.

IMPLICATIONS:
There is a radical difference between saying someone died FOR me and someone died BECAUSE OF me.
If I say someone died FOR me, I have no guilt in his death. He was a very good person who gave his life for me. I will only be thankful but I do not need to change much or anything because it did not happen due to something I did wrong. 
But if someone died BECAUSE OF me and I caused his suffering and death. Something I did killed him. Here I deserve the death penalty, there will be tremendous life-long guilt, deep remorse, condemnation, deep humility, painful remembrance, etc. I will be graceful and merciful to others who do me wrong because I did much worse. There will never be any thankfulness or any joy for what happened to the one who died. I will be thankful for every day I am alive, because I deserve the death penalty. It will require sincere confession, restitution and cessation before forgiveness can be asked. Forgiveness can never be expected or insisted upon. Even in the courts of law, it is very important that the person shows remorse for his actions. The action MUST STOP. For this you need deliverance, purging and cleansing. If I do it again, and kill another person, I deserve a double death penalty. The only thing good enough is to TOTALLY STOP with the wrong deed and to live righteous and holy. If others do the same, it will be a crisis for me, because they are also murdering someone and silence will be complicity.
The Scriptures are absolutely clear that JESUS DIED BECAUSE OF ME and MY sins. I caused His suffering and death, but it has been hidden from my eyes. And it is the Holy Spirit that reveals this to us as it says in Zachariah 12:10 and what Peter told the Jews on Pentecost.
Zec 12:10  And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 
That is what Peter told ALL the Jews at Pentecost:
Act 2:14  But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: Act 2:23  Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 
Act 3:17  And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. Act 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;   
The true belief and acceptance of this will have same life-long and deep effects on me as explained above. According to the Scriptures, this is exactly what Jesus’ cross, blood and death should work in us. That is HOW His blood cleanses from ALL sin. That is why He came to save us. We are all guilty of the death penalty. Our sins hurt Him. And this also HOW He saves us - by showing us how our sins pain Him, cause Him to bleed and murder Him, that we my confess our guilt, repent deeply with deep remorse, and that He may forgive, cleanse and deliver us, and fill us with the Holy Spirit - that sin may stop. This is exactly what Peter says in 1Pet. 2:24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. 
When we see this, we truly die with Him to sin as Paul said in Romans 6.
However, if we believe the wrong translations and the traditional teaching of men that  Jesus died FOR me, we will experience the first minor effects. This is an extremely serious mistake and deception. According to the Scriptures I committed murder and I will surely die, but I believe I am acquitted and have no guilt and will surely not die, because Jesus died FOR me. I continue living the same life and only try and live as good as I can in thankfulness, and there is no deep remorse for or repentance from my deeds. If I continue to do wrong or if others do the same, it is no big deal for me, even if we do it until death. There is also no confession and repentance – and we are not forgiven. Satan originally told Eve this lie i.e. that she will surely not die if she eats of the forbidden tree, and that lie is still being told and believed by most men – and they will surely die as God said whilst believing they will live. What a tragedy and disaster!. That is why the Scriptures say that if we sin, we do not know Him and have not seen Him. On that day we will say we did this or that for Him and in His Name, but He will deny that He knows us, because we continued with unrighteousness.
What is even worse than believing Jesus died for me, is to make God responsible for Jesus’ death, and to absolve ourselves. Can you imagine the grief it causes God. We killed Jesus but we blame Him and we do not even feel sorry. Other wrong translations and distortions of the Scriptures are then used to support this. Eg. Is 53:10  “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief.” It is contrary to the whole Is 53, Ps 69, to all the words of Jesus and many more. But if we were honest and if we truly believed the Scriptures, we could not be satisfied with this. The correct translation of Is 53:10 is: “Yet it pleased the Lord to BE bruised, to BE put to grief.”
It is because of these wrong translations and teachings that Ps 69 says reproaches have broken His heart and He looked for sympathy and comforters but found NONE!
Rev.13:8 says He is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. This has been happening sins Adam and Eve and even before them when the angels rebelled against Him. And it is still happening.
If we say Jesus died “FOR” me, we do not see or admit we are guilty of His death i.e. we absolve ourselves. Whom do we then say caused His death? Jesus clearly said man, sinners, the heathens, etc will kill Him. Who are those sinners then if we do not admit it was I? Only those Jews and Romans? No, Jesus was killed by and because of us and our sins. Because of and by YOU and your sins He was murdered. Confess it and repent that you may be forgiven, or you will remain guilty of the murder of Jesus, the Son of the Most High God who will one day judge all of us. This is the terrible mistake and effect of the demonic substitution teaching. This teaching caused the twisting and wrong translations of Scripture and allowed millions of people to wound Jesus many millions of times without any remorse.
